Wait, we need TWO CAMERAS?
Based on our field of view calculations, in order to take better footage, and capture the whole field, we’re going to need TWO CAMERAS. Stringing together a bunch of articulatable camera rails and mounts, here’s what we’ve got:
- a horizontal rail, squeeze the two mounts as close to each other as possible
- two rotating quick-release mounts angled out from center
- a 3-angle z-bracket to allow us to pitch the whole thing downward and set the tripod closer to the sideline.

not pictured here: the shoelaces used to (mostly unsuccessfully) keep the cracker box on the rig in the wind
The cracker box is for thermal management
GoPros rely on airflow from movement to cool down the cameras. It’s the worst feeling to finish a game, take down the rig, and then realize that the device shutdown early.
- When recording at our best/desired video settings, the GoPro would record for about 30mins and then overheat at around 171° F.
- Luckly, camera temperature is saved in the metadata track so that we can measure improvement.

- The Costco artisinal cracker box and attached a USB powered fan in the back brought things down to a reasonable level.
